9′ Sliding Door Made From Old Ship Deck

Our house has a “wing” upstairs that my wife and I wanted to use for dedicated guest rooms. Its two bedrooms and a bathroom with a hallway connecting everything. The only problem is that the hallway has this huge opening that leads into the main living room, which kinda kills the privacy we wanted people to have. So we built a door. A really, really big door. This thing is 9′ tall, 4′ wide, and weighs about 100 lbs. I’ve seen tons of sliding doors on Pinterest and thought “I …

Garage Workbench

When we moved into our new house a few years ago, we basically just filled up the garage with boxes and boxes of stuff, creating a very unusable room. This desperately needed a solution. I love to tinker and work on small projects and I wanted a well designed, good looking workbench to do these things on. Up until this workbench, I’ve been just spreading out on the garage floor on top of some cardboard and killing my back. This back corner looked like a prime spot for a redo. …

Hatching Quail

Hatching quail eggs is MUCH easier than I thought it would be. About 6 months ago, I was buying some new chicken chicks and while I was looking at them, I saw another room FULL of quail. Just thousands of them. I didnt really know much about quail, but the folks that owned the place were super helpful and spent a lot of time explaining how to take care of them. Very similar to chickens, except these little guys can really fly, so you need to have a different enclosure …

Essential Oils Rack

So my wife has gotten into essential oils for treating minor ailments and for diffusing to make the place smell good. As we get more and more bottles of oils, we were running out of places to put them. We started looking for solutions to this problem and there are a lot of terrible, terrible designs out there, so I decided to make my own. They sit on french cleats on the wall so you can grab a shelf and take it somewhere else for a while. Let me know …

Bunnies!

Just a short update here: We decided to get some bunnies! We got two super cute Rex rabbits from this feed store we know and love that sold us out chickens a while back. We name them Max and Zug Zug. Baby bunnies are the most chill creatures. They don’t yet know to be scared of things so you can just pick em up and they will sit with you forever. I’ve put them in my hoodie’s front pocket and they stay in there and fall asleep for hours while I …

Amahi Home Server – Build and Setup

So I had a super old eMachines computer running the original Windows Home Server, but the hardware was 6 years old, barely running, and generating a lot of noise and heat, so it was time to replace it. Windows Home Server 2011 has just come out, but I wanted to experiment with a free, open-source linux server before purchasing the $100 software. I came across Amahi – a Fedora based “home digital assistant” that transforms your ordinary Fedora install into a full fledged home server. This server was a little …
